Our nurses have always contributed to the overall success of the Royal Medical Services. The nursing department encourages its staff to take and active role in developing services and improving patient care through empowering nurses, providing them with continuing education and implementing a clinical ladder programme.
The department is responsible for managing nursing services across all hospitals and military units in the Royal Medical Services. This includes assessment of care delivery through inspections and regular meetings with matrons, supervisors and ward managers; planning for development of staff and services; and implementing required measures.
As part of our quest to provide quality nursing services our department annually plans and develops short and intermediate courses which are customized to meet the knowledge needs of our nurses and the changing care demands of our patients. The department runs specialization courses in intensive care, pediatrics, neonatal nursing and renal nursing annually. It also secures training overseas for other nursing specialties. Furthermore, the nursing department implements a clinical ladder programme for all staff nurses and midwives and runs annual written and clinical examinations for bedside nurses.
The Royal Medical Services employs over 5,000 nurses. The nursing department is involved in the annual recruitment of nursing students at Princess Muna College of Nursing and the Royal Medical Services College for Nursing and Allied Health Professions. The staffing demands for nursing services are mainly met through subsidized nurse education in these two colleges. Recruitment from nursing graduates from national universities is also carried out as needs arise.
